It's my last spring break as an undergrad and guess what I'm doing with it? PCB!!!! Or Panama City beach! That's the crazy spring break all college kids go to....JUST KIDDING not this gal. I've had plenty of fun as a college student so for this spring break I did something a little different.
I decided to take a road trip to McAllen, Texas to do some volunteering work with 8 other UW students. For those of you who don't know where this is (...ME!) it's very far down south about 20 minutes away from the US-Mexico border.
Here is a vlog I did along the way:
We spent 4 days volunteering with La Union Del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) and 1 day at Sacred Heart's Church. With LUPE, we got the chance to learn about immigration policies and their implications on undocumented people. We got to witness life in the colonias (where low income documented and undocumented families lived).
I'm not joking when I say, it felt like I was in another country. You may call me naive but I was surprised that there are people living in such a condition as these. There is no sewage system and no street lights in the colonias! THESE FAMILIES PAY PROPERTY TAXES!! They pay taxes for services they don't have. Shall I get started on taxes? Undocumented people pay income tax, property tax, sales tax and any other types of taxes that you and I (as citizens of the US) pay for, yet they don't get any of the benefits!
Anyways, on a lighter note, non profit organizations such as LUPE help organize petitions and try to gain legislators attention about the situation but so far the colonias still do not have street lights (which is such a dangerous hazard for children playing outside at night).
